I just went through this. Don't just crank on the bolts as hard as you can! The spec for the bolts is 11 ft/lbs, use a torque wrench and treat the cover as if it were a head, start tightening the bolts on the inside and alternate from top to bottom and outward from the inside.
Another way to look at it is to draw an imaginary spiral over the valve cover, going from the inside to the outside. Thats the order of tightening the bolts. Just snug them up on the firt pass and then torque to spec on the 2nd pass.
Haynes calls for gasket sealer on the corners and bearing ends of the cover. Be sure to put some sealer on the cover where it is leaking.
Finally, you might want to put thread SEALER (not thread locker) on the bolts. I had oil leaking from the bolt threads on the front of the valve cover on mine. I used thread sealer and no more leaks.
