Even with the plugs in and the throttle closed, any fuel in the cylinders will evaporate/drain away in a few minutes. Same with the fuel in the intake manifold (where most of it is). It will evaporate, leak down past the rings, etc. With the plugs out, it evaporated within a minute, even at cold temperatures. Yes, slower than on a 80 degree day, but it's still a volatile liquid.
So the engine has dried out. And if it fails to start again, simply leaving it alone for 10 minutes will be just fine.
