Running under the hopped-up configuration you've got perhaps ups the temperature of things, accelerating the wear on internal turbo bits. Could be some coking or something creating a little more drag on the bearing than when new.
As long as you're still getting boost at all, I doubt you could feel the difference by spinning the compressor by hand, but maybe it's worth a try to see if you notice anything. Again, very doubtful you'd be able to tell in this way because the effect would be felt at much higher rpms than your finger can generate.
Another consideration is that the K&N filter, while admitting a mite more air into the engine, ALSO admits a fair share more fine particles in there. K&N doesn't tell you this, but for filtration purposes a paper filter is always going to perform better. Personally, I'd never run a K&N filter in my car. It's possible that fine grit is creating accelerated wear in your turbo (and who knows where else).
I'll have to look for the page and link to it -- a Toyota racing engineer unloads on K&N because it caused the destruction of a few megabucks racing engines. And race tracks are a lot cleaner than your average public roadway. Others have tested their effectiveness by putting a smoodge of grease in the intake pathway, run the car for X number of miles, then examined the grit content of the grease. Compared against a normal filter the grease carried LOTS of grit.
Here's hoping there's some more benign and less expensive answer to your dilemma, but you might consider the turbo itself. Test it by hand and see if you notice anything.
