Last time this fall it was the fuel pump relay and I am hoping it may be the relay again. Fortunately, both times it died in the driveway, what are the odds on that.
The Fuel pump relay is a mutiuse five prong Bosch (332 209 159 original number), replacement was a Tyco through SAAB dealer. Swapping a similar relay on the fuse box didn't start the car last time until the new relay went in, swapping relays didn't work again this time.
1. In addition to the fuel pump relay, there is also an ignition relay, Wehrle brand #9522061 on eeuroparts' site, if this relay failed would that prevent the fuel pump from getting current? and
2. If the relay keeps failing, is that a sign of increased resistance and impending failure at the aging pump, or signs of arcing at the fuse box that leaves carbon tracks and causing shorts at the relay? Had that happen to me in my 79 Scirocco many years ago (loved that car anyway) which required replacing the fuse box.
At 136,000 miles on the original pump, I guess I can't expect any more from it, but for $20 worth of relays it may be worth the chance (and the high) of another DIY fix. Any other ideas? Its far too cold outside for me to spend much more time than this doing diagnostics again, its easier to have it towed and write a check for a new pump.
Thanks in advance.
