About July of 06, I installed a new to me used tranny in my '95 Aero. The gear shift on the old one had a real odd tendency to hop back in 3rd and 4th. Everyone said, motor mounts, shift bushings, coupler, etc. until one morning I experienced a lurching while backing up and an intermittent lockup and slight knashing sound in neutral. I installed the new one and all was fine for about 2 months. Then, same 3rd and 4th symptom and one year later for about 1 week, the wheels were locked when I first took off- like the caliper was froze and then released. That was for about 1 week. Then, the tranny lurched once, locked up entirely, and would not come out of whatever gear(s) it thought it was in. I feel I can honestly now assess when a tranny has only 6 mos to a year of life left in it. First hint, that 3rd and 4th gear shift knock.
