good advise on brake brake-in Burt. I agree. Also agree about using a real torgue wrench on the wheels. Also use neverschneeze on the wheel bolts. My indi shop says they will always losen up but that's BS, I think they got distracted during a few installations and forgot to go back and torque the wheels, that's where their problems started. Every time I have them do work involving wheel removal, I am resigned to loosen and retorgue the wheels to 95ftlbs. Thats what I use, 10 lbs. over spec to account for the lube from the nevershcneeze. However, seized caliper rails could also be a problem. Case in point: I recycle parts from our Aero to my work CSE. If the CSE needs something, then it gets whats on the Aero, and the Aero gets new stuff. Last fall, I recycled all the brake parts, stone stock Saab, pads, rotors, from the Aero to the CSE. Wow, no chatter, everything was perfect. I was happy! Two 9K's with great brakes.
Fast forward 10,000 miles on the CSE to January. Had to drive on a back dirt road during the worst January thaw we have ever seen. Had to go through 100' of mud that scraped the whole bottom. No choice, go or call AAA. only a Saab 2wd would have made it that day!
After that, drove home 60 miles , 50MPH Interstate, couldnt hold on to the wheel over that. Put the car up on lift, removed all 4 wheels, rinsed out 2" mud from inside of the wheels. Spent 1/2 hour rinsing mud and rocks from brakes, driveline, oilpan/frame, etc. Things looked pretty good. Thank God for lift and warm weather! Next day, all's fine except thaw is over now 0. Wheels back on 95ftlbs. no shake, no shudder, I breathe a cautious sigh of relief.
Week later, shudder during braking. Has been getting worse. As much as I tried to clean things up after the mudhole incident, I did not have the tempature/time to remove and clean all the brake componets. I am sure, when I finally do it neat month,or the month after, when the temps are such that I can work in the garage, that I will find that there is grunge in the slide pins for the calipers and that one or both are seized. Hopefully, I will be able to save them.
Short answer after long response is Torque the wheels AFTER you have been SURE the caliper slides are clean and lightly lubricated. Frozen calipers will warp anybodys rotor.
