And sometimes it can be (the fuel pum) Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Okay so it might not be the fuel pump., Aaron, Wed, 12 Mar 2008 12:38:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Check spark - turn the DI over, put a plug into each DI socket, and make sure each plug is grounded to chassis. Give the engine a crank and see if you get sparks.
You can have the fuel pump run, have wet plugs, and still have a bad fuel pump assembly. How? The fuel pump motor connects to the outlet with a hose. This is internal to the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank. If this hose falls off, the fuel pump runs, but all it does it push the fuel around inside the tank - a gasoline whirlpool tub, as it were. So why are the plugs wet? There is a valve in the fuel system to keep the pressure up. The pump pressurized the system before the hose fell off. This provides residual fuel pressure. The engine starts, but runs out of gas in a second or two as the fuel pressure falls. You try and start the car again, but with low fuel pressure, it doesn't squirt from the injectors, it dribbles. Fuel burns in the cylinder when it comes as a mist, not as a dribble. So you get wet plugs and no running.
So, if you hear the fuel pump run and have spark, the next thing to do is make sure the air intake isn't clogged. After that, you should check the fuel pressure and fuel flow. It could be as simple as the hose falling off inside the pump assembly, or a clogged fuel filter.
This happened to a friend of mine - we went through the entire checklist a couple of times and everything checked out. We heard the pump run. Only when he checked the fuel pressure did it become clear what had happened. In his case, they replaced the full pump assembly, but it could have been repaired by pulling the pump and refitting the hose.
