You'll find each gear very precisely, as precisely as you sit in the cabin shifting driving the car. Don't worry about finding neutral or whatever gear now. Loosen the collar to separate the shift rod should be your main concern.

Others and myself have posted the shift rod adjustment procedure on the board. I am sure you'll find it. Once you have the shift rod separated from the gear selection rod, whether you have the gear box still in the car or removed, you'll find each gear very distinctly.

The gear selection rod has three positions. Pushed in, in the middle and pulled out. The pushed in position corresponds to first, fourth and reverse. The pulled out position coressponds to first, third and fifth. In the pushed in and pulled out positions you can twist the rod. Feel it.
