A lot of people warn you off the autoboxes, but I don't think they are necessarily any worse than a lot of other auto trannys these days. You can't abuse them, though. I don't know if the boxes in the earlier models are different than in my kid's '95, but others here will know more.
My daughter's '95 has a reman unit in it. One of the previous owners had it done, but I do know it's been in there a long time, as the people we got the car from friends and had their service records. They'd had the car since about 45K miles.
It shifts fine and seems okay at 155K. I do fluid every other oil change, so it never gets too old, but this only gets half of the old fluid out. But at every 10K this is OK.
