I don't think Saabs are particularly high maintenance. The newer ones are luxury cars, and gizmos can break. Are Japanese cars rated more highly? Probably.

There's Maintenance and then there's repairs. Maintenance is what you do to keep it running as it should Repair are when it breaks. Typically, more maintenance means fewer repairs. That is true on any car.

A key to Saabs is that they aren't washed up at 100K. With proper maintenance, it's reasonable to go near 200K, and I have friends with cars at 300K. But all that takes maintenance. No car can be poorly maintained and still last.

I've never had a window fall down or a mirror fall off. Actually, one window fell - but that was a VW, and we're talking Saabs here.

I will tell you where Saabs get a bad rep - and it should be true for Audi, BMW, and Mercedes (and Volvo) - if you go to a dealer for all your work, be prepared to pay, and pay big. Dealer parts aren't cheap, and dealer rates are murder.

I love 9000's, but the only way I can keep them is to do my own work. Does that mean I'm rebuilding engines in my spare time? Nope - never had to open one up yet. But like any car, there is the niggly bits. If you bring a car to the dealer to get the dome light replaced, or to change the oil, don't buy a Saab. If you don't do your own brakes, don't buy a Saab. Don't buy a Mercedes, Audi, BMW, or Volvo, either. Heck, I'll be an Buick will kill you in parts and service if you don't do your own work.

Remember, any 9000 you'll find is over 10 years old, and most are at 100K miles. Folks can miss oil changes and let stuff go at 30K and not notice it at 50K, but if a car hasn't been kept up, at 100K things will start to show. Again, not just Saabs- any car that isn't made by MatchBox needs to be maintained. So don't assume you'll pick up any 100K Saab and get to drive it for the next 25K without worry. And again, I'd say that if it were a Honda or a Toyota.

Don't buy a car unless you have a complete maintenance history. If you don't get one, assume it hasn't had any. Maintenance, that is. Get it cheap and save the money for work. Even a fully maintained car will need some work when you get it - the guy selling it has probably deferred some maintenance knowing the car will be sold.

I love Saabs to death, and will keep driving 9000's as long as I can get my grubby little mitts on them. But they do take some work. They're safe, stable, and hold so much more stuff than you'd ever imagine. A nice sporty ride that is still comfortable, and they go like stink when you hit the gas.

So, do your own maintenance? Do you mind it? Oil changes? Belts? Brakes? Again, this is due to the fact that you'll be looking at a 100K mile car, and it doesn't matter if it says Saab or Chevy.

'98 was the last year, and they were basically unchanged from the '97 except for the letter on the VIN plate. Aero's are nice, but they might be slightly more beat on than a CSE. And not any faster, by the way, with a manual tranny. Some folks love the Aero seats, others hate them. YMMV. The anniversary edition was just some badging - a CSE came with every option, so there's nothing special. Or at least, not enough to warrant paying extra, in my opinion.
