I won an auction for a wood shift knob. It included the shaft with the reverse lockout foot. When I install it, it is loose when the foot is at the correct height. To me that means the splines inside the knob are stripped. I don't really want to glue it on, since I may need to remove it again.

My question is if inside the wood there is the usual white plastic part with splines for the shaft. If so, how can I separate the two? If I remove the shift pattern badge, will I be looking at the top of the white plastic piece? I have extras, so I would like to replace it if I can. There are chips on the knob where it looks like someone tried to pry up the badge before, so I want to avoid that if it's not necessary.
