...I'd maybe consider a car like this. Say $500-$1000, not more.

No particular reason (also look up governor seals to learn of another common automatic malady) -- just not worth much money. And if you have to fix anything in the future, you'll be wondering if it's really worth fixing when the repair may cost as much as the car.

And be warned: getting the A/C working again may cost as much as you pay for the car too.

2.3s of that model year are susceptible to balance shaft chain issues, which often advertise themselves in the form of snapped timing chains and expensive valve/piston collisions. If the head was replaced, perhaps they did the timing chain at that time and replaced the balance shaft sprocket on the crankshaft, which is responsible for all that destructive potential.

In short, if you can get this car for really short money it may be worth it; above that you're going to be able to find a newer-generation 9000 which is a better car overall, faster, and more plentiful.
