As Bruce says, it's easier if the fob is off the ring. You will need 2 of the type CR2016 batteries - most drugstores carry them.
On the side away from the buttons you'll see a little battery door that starts at about the middle of the body of the remote, and goes to the key ring hole. Take a flat blade screwdriver and at the end AWAY from the key ring hole gently pry the door out from the body and towards the key ring hole. Some folks with good fingernails have done it without tools.
The door will (eventually) pop off. Inside there are two batteries, stacked on top of one another, held down with a little brass-looking arm. Carefully slide the batteries out towards the key-ring hole. Don't pry up the arm (much). Note how the old batteries went in - I believe it is Positive side up (positive is the blank side; negative has the ring on it - also, positive is marked with a + ). Slide in the two new batteries, BOTH positive side up. Snap the back on. Press a remote button, and verify that the little light flashes. If not, the batteries went in wrong or were dead.
Stand near the car, and press the door lock button on the remote 5 times. Right around the fifth time, the car will unlock (or lock, depending on where it was before). Those button presses re-synchronize the remote with the car. If the batteries ever go dead, or have a bad connection, that's what it takes. If you find yourself having to hit the remote button a bunch of times for the car to 'notice' you, it could be a bad battery connection or weak batteries.
