Engine Tapping still after $1100.00 !!!

Hi fellow saabers,
I have a 1994 9000 Aero with 234k. I started hearing a tapping noise off and on, then it got worse. Fearing my timing or tensioner, I took it to my reputable mechanic. He agreed, and said due to the miles it probably was something in the timing. He encouraged that I replaced everything - both the balance chain kit and timing kit with all the guides while he had it open. $1100.00 later the tapping was still is as loud as it ever was and my mechanic felt so guiltly he gave me a discount (from $1500). He claimed at that time that it could be engine slap and he could quote me another engine. It this guy getting lazy and greedy or both?
The rattling/tapping goes away when the engine is loaded. At idle the engine purrs like a kitten. Car starts, and runs great otherwise. No smoke or burning oil. New pulleys and belt were also replaced and the tensioner was also good to go.
What could this be? Valves? I am stumped. Why does the noise go away under load?
