I have fortunately not experienced this... knocking on plastic that looks like wood...

Two areas that did drive me to look for a fix were 1) the Alternator, had a low frequency constant noise (could not hear it with the radio up!) and I finally took the alternator off and get it re-bearinged and built. smooth and quiet. Another 9000 was making growling noises, turned out it was the idler pulleys, replace them and it's almost like a new car, but not as good as it was when the tensioner went sideways and launched the pulley under the car, hearing thump thump looked to the rear view mirror to see what, for all the world my first thought, was a yo-yo had broked it's string and escaped at 25 or so mph away from the car. It was soooo quiet I thought the engine had exploded and stopped, turned the key off and coasted to the side of the road, waited for the tow truck about an hour, called my Saab Master and said I could start and drive off the overpass where I stopped, I started it, could NOT believe how quiet it was not having to drive all that crap on the rubber band! No PS pump, no Water pump, no alternator, no extra pulleys, pretty smooth... not recommended for more than a few minutes, water pump is very important!
