Relay works but doesn't Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: The relay DOES engage, but clutch does not..., Todd98CSE, Wed, 6 Aug 2008 16:48:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I think the problem is still the relay.
Yes, you see the contacts come together. That's really good - it means all the switches are doing their things. But the clutch doesn't pull in.
Step 1 - pull out the AC relay, and with a meter, measure the resistance to ground of pin 87B on the socket. (Look at the bottom of the relay as a guide - remember it's flipped). It should be pretty much a dead short. If it's an open circuit or more than a few ohms, the wiring is bad or the clutch is blown.
Next, switch the meter to volts, and with the car on, measure the voltage on pin 30 to ground. It should be 12-13 volts. If not, then the fuse is bad or the wiring broken to there.
Next, shut off the car, and with a big, fat wire, jumper pins 30 and 87B on the socket. Turn the car on. The clutch should pull in. If it doesn't, it's a bad connection at the fuse or the clutch. If the clutch does pull in, the relay is bad.
But the relay moves, it must be OK, right? Not at all. Just because the contacts close doesn't mean they are passing enough current for the clutch to pull in. The clutch takes A LOT of current to pull in, once in, it takes less current to hold it. Even a little resistance on those contacts from dirt or carbon pitting will prevent enough current from flowing. You can see the contacts close, but you can't see current flow. Or at least most folks can't.
Try cleaning the contacts with a little fine sandpaper - put a piece between the contacts, push them closed, and pull the sandpaper out. Be sure to clean both contacts (upper and lower). Don't remove all the metal, just brighten it up a bit.
