Nothing too serious, but the stock bottom end was 11:1. I had the factory heads decked a sniff just to make sure they were flat when I had hardened valve seats installed. I still had the factory Holley 780cfm on it, but for treats, really only had an Edelbrock performer RPM intake, Hooker full length headers and a Mallory Unlite pickup.

I'm sure part of it is the little difference from 10.5 to 11+, and the other part of it is the 442 was more of a low end torque grunter. The Z wasn't meant to start making power until 4,500rpm. Down low it was a gutless turd, once you got it spinning, it was like letting a rubber band go from 4,500 all the way to 8,000+. The majority of your time driving was spent with your foot in the firewall, and it would really load up and sputter when you tried to dink around town with it.

To be 100% honest, the 302 was the original motor to the car, and when I got it, I quickly built a real crappy 350 from a 1985 work van and dropped it in, just so I could have a junk motor to run 87 octane in. All things being equal, it was more of a pleasure to drive around with the junk 350 than with the 302. There's nothing like the sound of a small block at 8000 rpm through headers and chambered exhaust, but there's a lot to be said for being able to put put around, put crap gas in, and not worry if you blew it up.
