Try this-
With the plam of one hand, press on the top rear of the door frame, at the roof. With the other, gently actuate the latch - don't pull hard. Does the door open? If so, then the latch needs a little adjustment.
A problem with the latch mechanism is that if you pull the door, it puts pressure on the latch and causes it to bind. As the cars age and things 'settle,' things tend to bind. If you pull on the latch, it's a race to see if the latch will release before the outward pressure binds the mechanism. The technique is to pull the latch by pressing in with your thumb on the fixed part of the handle to counteract the pressure. I call the wrong way the "mother-in-law grip" because that's how my MiL opens the car door - or tries - grabs the handle and yanks. The door doesn't open. So she yanks harder. She's a small woman, but harder on machinery than a mortar shell.
Of course, this may not be your problem. If it isn't, open the door and remove the panel. There is some lost motion in the door latch assembly. At a minimum, there is a screw on the face of the door (hidden by the jamb when the door is closed) that locates that end of the latch. Make sure that screw is tighten down. But otherwise it's time for the panel to come off and the flashlight to come out. You'll probably see some lost motion in the linkages, and a little careful bending of a wire linkage will rectify the problem.
