Did you reset the timing with the new cap?
To Craig's point, what was the gap on the old plugs? If it's even a little wide, the car will run poorly. And a little wide is very little; if 0.04 inches is normal, 0.042 can be a problem.
As to the rest, when things are obviously burned, worn, blackened, or otherwise looking trashed, it's pretty clear why they don't work. But electricity doesn't always care about looks. I'll bet the gap between the rotor and the pins in the cap had grown. Remember, that gap adds to the gap on the plugs; even a few thou on the rotor/cap makes a big difference. And the guts of the plug wires are what counts; you can have cracks in the current-carrying part of the wires, and the outside look fine. Or you're getting arcing through pinholes in the wires too small to see.
