He doesn't cheat, your vehicle has to pass properly, however... Just had one of my 92 9000CDT auto smogged, this is our spare spare car. Hasn't gotten much driving in the last year. so the exhaust has a hole in it think it's in the over the rear axle part. During the test, the smart computer knows it isn't getting all of the air, so the tech says you must have a hole in the tail pipe, he puts a thinner longer probe on the tailpipe sniffer, ducks under the car, finds the leak, puts the thinner probe directly into the leak. computer is happy.
Next, and this is the really cool thing for anyone having issues with the 9000, in California on the cars with traction control that can not be switched off... you get to skip the 15 and 25 mph dyno run, a positive for having TCS! So during the run you have to keep the RPMs in a range. Was having a very difficult time getting it to stay, he tells me that the fan control (or the fan?) was creating interference on his pickup and the rpms reading was fluctating wildly. So I said, let's just unplug the grey plug for the fan, and put your monster fan in front of the car, did it and finished in 15 minutes. Passed, my 9000s always pass.
Thought that if you are in a similar situation with the rpm bracket being difficult to maintain, uses a hammerhead shark looking inductive pickup (you see it and you'll say ok that is what he was talking about) just disconnect the fan for the test...
