Sometimes the control unit has dry/cracked solder joints around the relays. The control unit on both of my cars ('94 and '97, UK so Right hand drive!) is under the dash on the drivers side behind the kick panel. It's a black plastic box mounted on a plastic tray thing near the bulkhead with a sliding metal clip. It's in the same place - i.e. passenger side on those strange LHD cars. Open it up and re-flow the solder connections on the relays and the connector. Bad connections will look like a dark crack around the metal pins, but you might need to use a magnifying glass to see them. If the push-switch on the centre console doesn't work either then your problem is probably with the control unit and can be fixed by re-soldering, job done - otherwise...

You haven't said what year your 9000 is, or whether or not you have this problem with the remote keyfob or just the key, so I'll try to cover most options...

My '94 doesn't have remote locking but the central locking operates from driver's and passenger doors. These cars use the same door solenoid in all doors and I think there is a switch in the lock mechanisms somewhere. If your central locking works on the passenger door and not the driver's door then it may be that switch or the wiring to it.

Older cars have a different solenoid and combined switch in the driver's door only and central locking only operates on the drivers door (I'm not sure when they changed but I know the '92 cars have the different solenoid). So the problem may be with the driver's door solenoid and switch.

My '97 has remote locking and (mis)behaves like yours when using the key in the driver's door although it's not an issue because the remote locking has always worked. (To be honest I can't remember if the locking from the passenger side works). I suspect the switch in the lock mechanism but can't be bothered to find out.

The central locking in all cars won't operate if the driver's door is open, or if the the control box thinks it's open so that switch is a possibility but then the interior lights would also be on? I haven't really thought about how the car differentiates between the drivers door and any other door - perhaps the driver's door has a second or different (dual-pole?) switch.

Then again there was an '88 that had this problem and it was something to do with the boot (trunk) solenoid - never could be bothered to sort it out. Besides the wiring on that car was very special - the rear speakers didn't work when the engine was running!!!

Hope this helps and good luck.
