Have you checked your exhaust manifold? check for carbon around the gasket or where it joins turbo indicating a small leak of exhaust gasses - would explain growl and ticking. I had a broken stud on my '97 last year.
Just ticking could be 1 (or more) hydraulic lifters, replaced them all on my '94 a few years ago because of this.
Growl could be from intake manifold - slight leaks here often close up once the engine has warmed up just a little and I do mean just a little, less than a minute is enough especially if you have the intake heater plate.
Could also be head gasket maybe ?!?
