how tight is fuel pump ring supposed to be?

it's odd, i thought i smelled fuel when i got out of the saab tonite after changing the gas tank this weekend. but i don't smell it under the tank, and i don't smell it in the hatchback area.

i tightened down on the ring until it was pretty darn tight and the pump itself wouldn't budge/turn. didn't want to overdo it, but how to guage what is tight and what is "truly" tight enough.

the feed valve i had to replace, and because i don't have a heat gun, i used some 5/16" fuel line over the new feed valve with two injector clamps, and placed that over the original plastic line, with the remainder of the feed valve inside for strength, and put two clamps on that.

someone else had done that in a previous post, and i did that to connect my new fuel damper because of the same issue (couldn't get plastic line on new damper without ruining it).

injector clamps were about as tight as i could probably get them, so that seems a doubtful leak source, right?
