wow, pulling the auto tranny is a pain, so maybe save that for last if you can't confirm it's the rear main seal. how much oil?
one of my old saab indy mechanics said he had a bad rear main leak and he just kept adding oil, said it wasn't worth pulling the tranny.
i've pulled the auto tranny. everything is easy but getting the flywheel bolted/unbolted to the torque converter, and making sure you don't damage anything putting the converter back on.
i wound up having to use an impact wrench, pulling the intake manifold, etc., to get in there.
if you do drop the auto tranny, i used a motorcycle jack, about $70 from the auto parts store, came in handy since it's so heavy. you support the engine with the 4x4 cross piece you make with some 2 x 4s resting on the inner portion of the fenders, with a hook in the center to support the eye hook attached to the top of the engine.
a big pvc pipe fitting from home depot makes a nice tool for tapping in the rear main seal.
