I have this pretty sound '96 CS and I'd like to take care of the few points where I see rust, scrape to bare metal, sand, treat with phosphate etch, epoxy prime, then paint locally with as close a match as I can to rest of car and clear coat over top. (Local painting only, just where rust now is and a little beyond. Spray (metallic) touchup paint into a jar cover, apply to car with a sponge brush.)

What I have found so far:

At center bottom of hatch opening, on the sheet metal lip where the rubber hatch gasket pushes on, rust for a few inches along it, inside and out, and also a good sized patch on outside, running down to where bumper contacts body. I think I'll pull the rear bumper to deal with this.

Several small patches of rust at front edge of hood, one on hood.

Good sized patch of rust on driver door sill at front corner. Seems external and not rust boiling out from inside.

A small patch of rust-wrinkled paint on each of the windshield pillars, about midway down. (Like worm tracks under the paint.) Also small patches of the same at bottom corners of windshield. I figure I'll pry out the black plastic windshield trim to get at these areas, then do my best on them.

I have read that these cars can rust away badly at windshield frames and I've seen one that has done that, beyond repair. I want to slow that down.

I notice the black plastic pan tucked under the window trim all along the bottom of the windshield, covers the sheet metal. It seems as if this might be where the worst rust happens, sealed underneath that plastic and staying wet and rusting all the time. So, should I pull that plastic out and check things out on mine?

What about underneath the side skirts below the doors? Does rust happen there? I'd be glad to pull that trim off if I thought I could stop something serious.

Lastly, mine seems to have a little rust at forward edge of rear wheel wells, under the undercoat and creeping out onto the paint at the "doglegs" by the rear doors. This might have been done up once - - there's been some repainting on both sides down low.
