Mileage....truths ? myths ? opinions ? Posted by vtsnaab [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I was talking with a man I know recently whose son bought his first Saab.
It came with some problems and repairs have been done, and right then the
old guy is going on about how it is a high-mileage car...at like 110k !!!
We batted it back and forth for a few minutes and that was that, but it
got me to thinking because this old guy drives a Chrysler car and so did
my folks when I was a kid...and memories came back for comparison.
Of course I got a healthy dose of my folk's ideas and thought for a long
time that their car choices must have been wise - but what else came to
me was that back then 50k was 'up there' and 100k was OMG high mileage.
And it seems these ideas have persisted even though many cars now go for
300-400k easily.
(Says he with his still-young 9KT at only 244k+....!)
Further, I got to thinking that if someone was, say - a salesman in
Vermont for a company in Tennesee, and they covered that distance in a
fairly regular fashion they'd put 100k on a car in a year pretty easily.
My own opinions go like this on the matter:
If a car only lasts 100k before it is 'done' then the company making
such junk has no justification for staying in business; and - I think
the 100k myth either came about because cars with wheels like the old
Model A's had would be all done for sure by then, and the American
car makers just decided to use that convenient and already accepted
number for a psych job to seel plenty good big bombers to goofy folks.
Anyhow - what I'd really like in reply if anyone knows is some serious
history about the 100k and/or mileage thing as well as whatever opinions
anyone'd like to share...?
Best Wishes,
mark
