My 97 with an aftermarket alpine cd unit was really annoying - volume control functioned with 0 being quiet, 1=low, 2=loud, 3=really loud, 4=rockin' out.
What whoever installed it did was feed the speaker level outs of the head unit into the H/K amp under the seat.
I swapped in another amp, running coax low-level outputs to the amp. But, I could have kept the H/K amp and had correct level control if I'd swiched some stuff around.
If you find the russian wiring diagrams (from the Mitchell cd) you'll find that the harness is only labeled between the amp and the speakers, but they made it easy - the small guage wire pairs match the same color wire pairs that go to the speakers. You can patch into the correct pairs with low-level outputs from the head unit (if it has them) - I think I'd do that under the seat rather than behind the dash. Much easier access - and fishing coax cables from the console to under the seat is easy.
