More questions on that shift coupling tapered pin Posted by Rod [Email] ![]() ![]() |
OK, I'm on trouble now. Whenever I drove my wife's 98 CSE I had problems getting it into 5th gear, although my wife only rarely had trouble with it. I decided that a shift rod alignment was called for so I followed Yaofeng's clear instructions and 10 minutes later I had aligned it all perfectly - and made the shifting worse. Now even my wife has problems getting it into 5th, so needless to say I am not popular!
The problem seems to be that there is a lot of slop in the tapered pin that holds the shift coupler on to the shift rod linkage. The coupler itself seems fine, but there is a lot of play at the pin. It seems that I should be able to tighten that up, but reading Henry's saga below, I don't want to break off the pin and make myself even more unpopular.
Any advice? Is there a way of tightening up the connection without risking shearing off the pin?
