I did the alignment twice, and the second time I was sure everything was lined up perfectly.
The tapered pin goes through two hollow concentric rods - one connected to the coupler and one to the shift mechanism going into the gearbox. I assume that the pin is tight within the inner rod, but the hole on the outer rod seems to have rounded off a lot and that makes for a lot of play within the mechanism. Sorry it's hard to explain - I really need to get a video of it!
Anyway, I'm not sure if tightening up the nut on the pin would help (even if I could) because if the hole in the outer piece is significantly larger than the hole in the inner piece, then the pin will never pull the two pieces together tightly. But I'm not too excited about trying to get a whole new shift coupler in there.
