From experience: 5 speeds suffer from : Disintergrating Differential main bearings, failing layshaft bearings, Destroyed reverse Ironically worse on the 'imoproved' shnchro reverse version. Synchros them selves are V weak.
We don't even need to mention clutch/slave isues.
Auto boxes suffer from Gummed innards (valve body issues) the occaisional Main pump failure. and worn clutch packs.
Pick yer poison as there is NO clearly superior type... until the Aisin Autobx used in the 2000 + model years.
As mentioned above, Stoplight drags WILL kill yer trans 5 spd OR auto.. period.
As an aside I started the 'conversion' of a 9000 from Auto to 5 spd.. only to give up on it after wayyyy too many hours spent in it's innards Simply because I realised that I could buy a ..Much.. better condition Saab for v little $$. A waste of precious 'Life time' for no actual gain
