I am very sure the seal rides on the crankshaft... Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Sat, 1 Nov 2008 12:10:50 In Reply to: It's been a while, but..., Bill U, Sat, 1 Nov 2008 05:10:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The seal does not ride against the pulley. Or shouldn't.
To quote the Bentley manual on installing the seal:
"The old seal was originally installed flush to the cover surface. the new seal should be installed slightly deeper so that it does not ride on the same area of the (crank)shaft. This will allow for a good seal despite any wear."
If the seal is installed flush to the surface, it can't be touching the pulley - there is clearance between the pulley and the oil pump cover. Otherwise the pulley would be chewing into the oil pump. A new seal installed slightly deeper than the cover surface can't touch the pulley at all.
It is a crankshaft seal, not a pulley seal. The tolerances required to make for a face seal to a pulley that bolts on would be very difficult to machine.
You aren't tossing much oil. You didn't mention the milage, but assuming you've got 100K + on the engine, I'll bet there is some wear on the crankshaft, and you're leaking due to the new seal riding on the old worn spot.
In your place, I'd live with the leak for a little while - the new seal might set in. It's not like it's leaving a great heaping pool of oil on the ground. If it doesn't clear up in a few days, I'd pull the pulley and push the seal in just a hair (RayF is more correct in the 1/16 than my whopping 1/8") and that should do the trick.
