First, before I pulled up the carpets to test the resistance of the rear wheel sensors, I would test the resistance right at the ABS controller. You can take the connector off the the computer and check all 4 sensors via the connector pins. (I don't have the pin-out in front of me, but perhaps some one else does.)
Second, the 1991 model, at least, had a diagnostic plug that could be used to pull the error codes from the computer. It involved shorting two wires on a plug and counting ABS light flashes on start up. The Townsend site used to have the procedure for doing this, and Quasi's site might have it too. In general, even for an open sensor, the light should go off initially, then come on once you are in motion. The computer counts pulses--it does not check resistance. If the light never goes out during after start up, there is something else going on.
