a wide chisel-like tool that goes on a cordless reciprocating saw. The tool comes in different widths and they work it along the inside edges to cut the old cement/sealant. The corners are hard to do and probably where ay breakage is likely to happen. The guy who did the windshield on my '96 this summer used a couple different size blades. He cracked the window getting it out, but then he wasn't trying not to.
Seems like it would be pretty tough to do, IMHO. It's a big piece of glass and the cement/sealant that holds it in is tough stuff. If you just need a new windshield, shop the price. I paid $180 for mine, installed, with new Pilkington glass. The whole job took the guy an hour and change. It'd probably take me at least half a day to do it, assuming I had the tools and stuff and it went smoothly (highly unlikely!).
