I read in some places that you really should change the filter, but I too am not too sure how important it is.
I changed one on my '89 325is BMW a number of years ago. It was somewhere north of 150K and I just did it while I did a bunch of other maintenance.
I'll probably just let the box continue to collect dust in the closet (The filter came with the car when I bought it).
Anyway, it's nice to have the car back. It's the longest time the car's been down since I did the head gasket nearly four years ago. Most of that time waiting for the part to arrive, then happily riding my bike to work until the weekend.
