...if you feel you want to protect your new pump from shortened life due to a partially clogged filter (which can happen but I don't think I've ever witnessed it). On the other hand, it took this long for the original (presumably) pump to die, so you can judge for yourself whether this is likely to happen in the time you keep the car.
Fuel filters are one of the things I always "mean to" do but often don't. In 9000s they can be pretty well stuck to the banjo bolts and a real pain to get off. So if you were to forget to do the job, you wouldn't garner undue criticism from me!
Good that you found the problem and fixed it by the way!
