Greetings all;
after about 3 hours on the road, I noticed white smoke coming from the a/c compressor pulley. The pulley is still turning while the engine is running, but there is a noticeable burning smell. I also noticed what appeared to be burned grease flung out from the compressor clutch. I continued driving for another hour without further trouble.
Can I still drive the car by shutting of the A/C system and disengaging the A/C clutch? If so, what is the procedure for disengaging the a/c clutch? I need to drive another 4 1/2 hours to get back home to VT, and my mechanic. He says he can put a used a/c compressor on for about $200.
I found another post that recommended putting a smaller serpentine belt on, thereby bypassing the a/c compressor pulley. However, I can't see how the smaller belt could be fitted is such a way that it would not rub against the tensioner.
