Cleaning the AIC Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 11:00:35 In Reply to: AIC, Ari [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 9 Dec 2008 17:36:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
On cars with a turbo, the AIC is a silver-colored cylindrical device located in back of and below the intake manifold, close to the throttle body - I imagine it is in a similar location a N/A car (although the intake manifold setup is a bit different). You will be able to find it by noting that there are two approximately 1/2-inch black rubber hoses that connect to it from the throttle body on either side of the throttle plate; the AIC controls a variable amount of filtered intake air, bypassing the throttle plate. See the picture below.
I have successfully cleaned my AIC by removing one of the hoses and spraying in some Gumout Carburetor Cleaner (man that can is old, my last carbureted car was a 1973 Audi!), letting it sit for a bit, reconnecting the hose, then starting the car. I seem to recall that someone else said that carb cleaner was too harsh for the plastic parts that are in there (not sure if there are), so perhaps you can try something like electronics contact cleaner instead. It's worth the five minutes that this takes before trying to replace the AIC, which is expensive and can be a pain on a 9000 (it's up top on a 900).
Good looks or not, I would replace the few feet of vacuum hose on your car; it's about $0.50 per foot and you might be surprised what you find.
