While driving yesterday, I noticed just a bit of extra vibration going down the road, which I shrugged off as probably snow / ice in the wheels. I also noticed when applying a little pressure to the shifter when going down the road, that I could feel some excess vibration in the shifter.
I got on the highway, and everything seemed fine. I exit the highway and come to my first top light. The light turns green, I let the clutch out and BANG......car loses forward acceleration, and I hear a grinding noise, that sounds like splines slipping. Putting the car in any forward gear, or reverse, and letting the clutch out gives this sound.
1) The noise goes up and down in pitch with RPM.
2) The speedometer DOES work, so the differential is turning.
3) When in neutral with the car running, there is NO noise.
4) With the clutch pressed in, and the car in ANY gear, there is no noise.
5) The noise starts when the clutch is let out; any gear in cluding reverse.
6) With the car on FLAT ground, I can put it in reverse of first, gently start to let the clutch out, and the car will start to move EVER so slightly, like something is really trying to grab, then it slips and the grinding noise ensues.
Something I did not think to check....if the car is on an incline and shut off, will putting it in first or reverse prevent it from rolling. I only kept it in neutral and used the e-brake.
Thing the tranny's grenaded? My hope is that somehow, the splined driver that feeds the passengers side wheel via intermediate shaft, has stripped, and that's what the issue is.
