In the US, the impression of a hatchback is that it is a cheaper car. Sedans are more upmarket, or so the thinking goes. So hatchbacks are relegated to the less expensive cars, and more expensive are either sedans or SUVs.

From my limited experience in Europe, it's the other way around. There are many upmarket hatchbacks, and fewer sedans. Yes, Really Upmarket is dominated by sedans (and sports cars). But there are lots of premium hatchbacks on the market I'd give my eyeteeth to have in the US. I think this is due to the fact that Europeans, in general, have many fewer cars in a family, so that car has to work harder. They also have smaller cars, due to parking, taxes, fuel, etc., constraints. Hatchbacks pack the most into the smallest space. In the US, folks will have a sedan, and have a minivan or truck to haul stuff. If you live in the UK, you may only have one or two cars, and they have to do it all. And if you've ever driven in a European city, you'll know that a larger car just won't fit. I've rented some cars in the UK where the wing mirrors will flip back at the touch of a button. Normally that's for parking, because parking spaces are much tighter. But I've had to use it on narrow roads.

It's really all about perception, and what marketing has told us to believe, and what we've chosen to believe. And sensible - heck, one sure sign of riches is the blatant lack of sensibility.
