Battery size chart Posted by sam96CS [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Correction: It's a Group 47 battery, Lee Harris, Fri, 26 Dec 2008 21:34:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I was wrong about the 34R in my first posting.
A battery size chart is shown at http://www.rtpnet.org/~teaa/bcigroup.html
Per that chart:
a group 47 battery is 9-11/16"L, 6-7/8"W, 7-1/2"H
a group 41 battery is 11-3/16"L, 6-7/8"W, 6-7/8"H
a group 34R battery is 10-1/4"L, 6-13/16"W, 7-7/8"H
The error in my first posting was looking up a '94 instead of a '93 9000 CDE at interstatebatteries.com
I could still be wrong in my second posting where I said the '93 CDE takes a Group 47 battery. The reason why I could be wrong is that auto parts retailers offer what they have, which is not always equal to the original battery.
For example, if you look up my '96 CS online at Advance Auto parts, they specify a Group 41 battery. The Saab owner's manual isn't much help because all it specifies is 12V and 70Ah. My battery tray is 10-3/4" long, and that is how I know that a Group 41 (11-3/16" long) isn't the correct group size. Plus my terminals are reversed; the positive terminal is closest to the firewall. Sure, I could cram in a Group 41, find a way to secure it if my hold-down clamp isn't compatible, and replace the cables if they don't reach. There are probably some '94 and later 9000s on the road whose owners or indy shops have done exactly that. But that accommodation doesn't make the Group 41 the right battery. The 34R is a slightly larger battery that fits my '96 CS in every way, electrically and mechanically. That said, if I bought a 9000 whose PO switched to a Group 41 without making a complete mess of things, then I probably wouldn't go to the trouble and expense to switch it back to a 34R. I would like the fact that Group 41s are more readily available.
There is another possible source of group size error, namely that Saab made changes over time, and not all of those changes are clearly documented. Springs are a classic example of this, and maybe batteries are another. You may find that I'm simply wrong about the battery for the '93 and/or '94. If so, then I hope you'll post a follow-up for anybody else driving a CDE of the same vintage.
There's a lot of useful information and insights about batteries at http://jgdarden.com/batteryfaq/carfaq7.htm Worth anybody's time who wants to pick a suitable battery for their car, climate, etc.
