The instructions I was following were not for a 2.3 L engine. Here is what I did to get it out. After removing the wheel, front half of the wheel liner, the serp belt, I removed the 2 bolts holding the alternator. I disconnected the wires. I removed the upper engine mount. I also lifted the power steering reservoir from it's mount and lowered it into the wheel opening to get the hoses out of the way of the alternator. You can now work it up though the opening being careful of the hose fitting at the end of the manifold. Rock the engine slightly forward to clear the fitting. It goes back in easier than it came out.
