I know there are fine officers out there, I just seem to have the displeasure of encountering the other ones. I'm not limiting my judgement to times when I commited an offence, such as having only one backup light, but also times when I was the one offended, such as my house being broken into. It was instances such as this that entrenched my feelings. My honest belief is that since the 1970s when traffic stops became seemingly the most frequent act performed by law enforcement, their relationship with the majority of the public has deteriorated. Prior to that, >99% of the population saw the Police Officer as their friend, who was there to provide help when needed, and to keep the other <1% in check, while viewing >99% as law abiding citizens. Now, it seems that >99% see the Police as a potential harasser, 1% figures "If the cop gets me, I'll beat the system in court, if I ever end up there", and police see everyone as a potential violator of some kind, it's just a question of the police officer being able to figure out what the violation is and making it stick. Kind of sad for our society as a whole, and sad for decent people who entered law enforcement because they wanted to make the world a better place.
