You will think me mad (join the club) but on my n/a 9000S, fitting a rising-rate fuel pressure regulator made a noticeable difference to drivability and performance. You need to get it set up, of course.
On the exhaust, go for it, even on the basis that (a) you will save a little money and (b) more noise will make it feel faster.
Like adamK I loved my n/a car even though it was a 1990 2-litre automatic with 130 bhp. We have a phrase over here "it wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding". Well, rice puddings were in no danger, but it was a lovely civilised car in black with pale grey leather and I mourned it when it self-ignited at 180k miles.
Finally, to disagree with David I'm afraid - I put a 3" JT turbo-back exhaust on my only '93 car and it made a lot of difference in terms of flexibility so, presumably, low-end torque. It was very well suited to the automatic box, too. Doesn't help with your non-turbo of course.
