would have reduced spool time, getting the turbo on the boil a bit faster, thus your useable difference in power.
That's what many a person has reported right on this very board. So I need to clarify my turbo-exhaust comment to say you're quite right, it does help in those cars. But the mere subbing in of a straight pipe in place of the mid muffler won't register much if any effect.
Again, in non-turbo guise, little is to be gained by exhaust mods.
I have to say, my Dad's 92 non-turbo is quite sprightly itself, even having an older 2.0 head on top of it after I rebuilt it five or six years ago. The 2.0 head has measurably smaller intake ports so doesn't breathe quite as well. But no complaints. At 150 bhp, it's not that far off the original 2.0 turbo, which was 160 bhp (albeit with much lower torque onset).
