Hello, lately I've noticed my clutch seemed to have very little room engaging/disengaging. Alsmost right to the floor, then about an inch out and it's engaged. I thought this was a bad thing. I only drive the car about 5 miles a day. Tonight, I drove for a good distance. Once warmed up, it seemed that I got some more clutch back. It shifts fine, starting off there was no shuttering until tonight. Very very lottle shuttering. When I arrived to my destination, I notice a massive amount of smoke coming from under my hood.. Not good. I raised the hood, and tried to look to see what it was, but couldn't because I was caught unprepared without a flashlight. I can tell that the smoke was coming from the tranny/clutch area. The smell of the smoke was new to me. Definitely didn't smell like brakes, and I've never smelled a clutch go before.
Why would it be smoking so badly? It seemed to drive fine.
Very nervous. Now I'm about 35 miles away from home, and am going to try to go tomorrow morning.. I have the security of AAA gold. But who wants to sit on the side of the highway and wait for an hour for them to show up..?

Does anyone have any idea what may be happening here? I understand that maybe the clutch is going, but smoking??

Please, someone make me feel better. I'm attached to this car. 1989 9000S.
