while there is some truth to what you posted, a couple of additions. there are industry standard codes, and then manufacture specific codes. I believe that the industry standard codes must include items that pertain to the emissions side of the system, which is the reason that the OBD came into play - a quick and relatively fool proof method of testing emissions related items/issues with the intent of cleaning up the environment - however the manufacturer specific items do not have to be part of those "released" codes. The older Saabs before the 1996 cutover to mandatory full ODB-II support *did* support ODB-I and almost -II in various flavors. My 1992-1994 9000s have connectors under the right seat at the passengers heels for connection to the TECH-II and many things are funtional in test and resetting and all that, the 1996 has a single connector under the steering wheel (the prescribed place) and shows, as you said, english words rather than Pxxxx numbers. I can also work with 1988 and newer c900s on some codes (SRS being one - more on later cars) I can also reset the codes. The Tech-II also has software for GM vehicles, so I have used it on my son's Olds Delta 88 (gifted from in-laws) when issues arise there. It also helped buddies with GM trucks figure out that they had an evap issue that kept turning on and off the check engine light. A slow O2 sensor, and which one, and generally got them pointed in the correct direction. either an easy fix with parts from a dealer or autoparts store OR something that really needs the dealer.

So my reccomendation to you is to get friendly with either an indy or a super stupid hobbyist that has a TECH-II (hey, I resemble that remark). The amount of time you spend trying to beat the system for a device that *you* most likely would use for or five times is a loosing proposition. Now if you have 5 or 6 Saabs, or work on them, or something even *more* afflicted than that... then looking for a TECH-II or an ISAT or some computer software (won't happen for the Saab) is something to do. I check codes for other Saab afflicted hobbyists in my area for $25 a pop.
