Same thing happened to me, Dunlop Sport A2s worn to a still fair distance from the wearbars, but created such a racket that I was ready to replace the wheel bearings at $250 each parts only. As we entering the winter season, I replaced the tires first (Kumho HP all season AST) and the noise went away. If we were just entering summer, I might have tried to get the rest of the wear out of the tires and spent the money on bearings I didn't need, thats how bad the groaning/thrumming sound was. Remember that each time rubber goes through a heating/cooling cycle, it hardens a little bit more than before. Kumhos were great in last Sunday's noreaster of 3 inches of unplowed snow, by the way.
With new tires, the car is quieter than a Chicago politician before a grand jury!
