I assume that if you put it in gear and let out the clutch, you'll get some interesting noises from the transmission area.


I'd say it's a blown CV joint or tripod. The splines have probably sheared off, and the axle (if the CV joint) is just turning. Since the differential puts all the power to the wheel that turns the easiest, the 'good' wheel doesn't move.

Another possibility is a bad wheel bearing, or the inner splines of the hub (that accept the axle) have stripped. Or both. As an example, if the nut holding the hub on gets just a little loose, that allows play in the axle/hub splines. Play allows the parts to wear - the more they wear, the more play, the more play the more they wear....Eventually you'll get lots of vibration, in corners at first, then even on the straight.

Jack up a front wheel and turn it, out of gear. See if the axle turns. Do this for both. If both axles turn, put the car in gear (it's off!), and see if you can turn the tire. You shouldn't be able to. But if you can turn a tire, you've got a blown tripod. This test won't isolate to the blown tripod - you'll have to dig in.

As to 'the part was just replaced' - that's no guarantee. Parts break throughout their life cycle. It may have been defective since new. It may have not been installed right.

The good news is that dropping in a new axle isn't very hard or very expensive. Let's hope it's the CV joint side.
