If this were a C900, it's textbook stuck starter switch

Peter:

What you describe sounds kind of like what happens on C900s when too much spilled soda and donut crumbs finally freeze the ignition lock works up and the car is running but the starter is still engaged. (The awful noises you were hearing.)

The odd things that don't work are I think kind of analogous to the things that go blank WHILE you're cranking. Not supposed to work because car is, it thinks, cranking, and needs the volts; will work again when key is back off crank.

Does your key feel normal now? Does it have spring to it when you turn it all the way towards start, and then pop back to what would be the run position?

If not, you've probably sheared off the little piece inside the ignition switch that the return spring works against. And, without that, the key didn't self-return to Run.

The ignition switch is about $60, more at dealer. Less if you pull one at a junkyard.

But if that's what happened you've probably also ruined your starter, and that's not cheap and not as easy as the key switch.

If you do need a new starter and if the ignition switch doesn't have its usual return spring action, you MUST get a new ignition switch or risk ruining another starter anytime you forget to manually return the key to Run.

(If key action still feels right, then I guess it's still possible that the starter got stuck on, from some contact failure inside the switch, but I think it's fail safe that way, if switch does pop back off Start.)
