I am a new Saab 9000 owner, so I don't have very good advice, but I can tell you what I have learned. There is a very strong Saab 9000 community. Not only are many of these people extremely knowledgeable, but they love their cars and are actively maintaining them. Many do it yourselfers are not only keeping their cars going, but are participating in online forums, documenting their discoveries, workarounds, and fixes, and sharing thorough, practical information. Also, it seems that any time somebody comes across a wrecked 9000, they are willing to part it out and send you what you need for little more than the cost of shipping. For most of the life of the 9000 Saab only made two cars and both of these had long lifespans with minor revisions. There were also many interchangeable parts. This means if you need some minor part like a power window switch, or a headlight switch that would normally cost $500 for a 18 year old import car, you can get it from some helpful Saab owner from almost any model Saab produced over 15 years for about $15.

I don't think there are that many cars that you could do this with. So, here are the three advantages that help keep Saab 9000 ownership costs low.

1. Interchangeable parts from many years can work for some fixes and people will send you these pretty cheap.

2. Active and enthusiastic online community with helpful members and tons of documentation for fixes, trouble spots, etc.

3. People are passionate about the Saab 9000. For style, cargo space, economy, and sportiness there really are very few competitors produced at that time or in the used price range now. You don't want to buy an older, foreign car that nobody cares about because this volume of help will not be there.
